U.S.-Iran tensions rattled fixed income markets last week, increasing the probability of a prolonged conflict. Surging oil prices and rising inflation expectations drove interest rates higher. Although the FOMC held the discount rate steady, a hawkish voting pattern drove Treasury yields meaningfully higher. Municipals weathered the volatility, with yields largely holding their April gains. Solid demand for the asset class propelled the broad muni index to a 1.15% return in April — the best April return since 2014 and the first positive April since 2021. Despite richer muni/UST ratios, May typically marks the beginning of a strong technical period as the pace of reinvestment demand increases and supply typically slows. With yields still at attractive levels, now is the time to put cash to work, in our view.
How is supply trending?
Last week’s $9.5B calendar was well-received with solid demand for longer dated bonds. This week’s supply is expected to tick back up to $12.8B.
Market impact: Long issuance picked up marginally and continues to find strong demand.
What do yields look like?
Yields rose across the curve last week hindering returns but rallied in April. Despite the less favorable yield movement last week, performance in April was still constructive.

Another positive week with $615M of inflows pushed April total net flows to over $2B. Meanwhile, year-to-date inflows exceeded $30B — the third highest level on record since 1992 (when Lipper began tracking flows).
